I recently saw a (US) woman on social media go to Turkey for a full health check up and the whole trip and everything was less than if she did it in the US but when I did my homework I read mixed reviews. An in-law is from Turkey and is visiting next month so I’ll prob grill him about it lol.

There's this ancient story going around on the internet about an American that flew to Spain, got surgery, had a two week holiday before returning and all of it still cheaper than the same surgery in the USA.

I believe it. Not that you asked, but for me, I’d be all about dental work. I take care of my teeth (dentists even say as much then make me feel guilty when I have cavities???) but I need sooooo much work done and part of me is tempted to get a quote overseas and just get it all done.

I will never forget when I was a kid and visited family in Poland we had to take my sister to the emergency room and kid me is worrying about how much it’ll cost and the stress my dad would have to deal with and it was LITERALLY nothing. Not that she had to have surgery or anything but just getting stitches in a US hospital can put someone out.

I hope it all works out and please report back! I’m just imagining all these doctors and dentists getting an influx of US patients and not being surprised but also thinking “wtf is going on there??”

Oh I've talked to friends of friends at length about this who have done it, and the doctors expect it. They are anything BUT surprised lol.

Many years ago, my husband got mugged in Spain and was taken to a hospital. He immediately told the provider that he couldn't afford medical care and wanted to leave. The doctor responded that he wasn't in the U.S. and he wouldn't be charged anything.

I had the opposite of this happen when I was in the US D: I was hit by a car while riding a rented bike, and a dude who witnessed it was trying to get me to let him call an ambulance for me because my leg was pretty messed up and I had fallen pretty badly, and I was just trying to get away from it and begged him not to, lol. I did have travel insurance, but did not want to deal with that whole… thing.

Oh no! I'm so sorry you went through all that while you were here! I hope you're all better now.

Thanks! It was mostly fine, haha. I had a few killer bruises and scratches, and weirdly lost sensation on the front of my shin for months after, but no fractures or anything.

Thinking about it, though, I guess it wasn't really the opposite - more like very similar, but with actual legitimate costs associated.

yup!!!
before i had mine done i did some research and found a message board of people discussing theirs and what their doctors/other patients told them and a lot of them were essentially told the same thing, could go to spain and get it done for less than $10k, and have a nice vacation before/after for what it would cost in the us. its fucking nuts.

You just need to visit private medical doctors or clinics in any country. Don't need to travel so far, Mexico has amazing doctors and dentists.

My friends and family living in the US come to DR once a year just to get all the medical and dental things out of the way.
