Wei Ying and Lan Zhan! I’m still obsessed with MDZS. I tried hard to avoid it but the fanfics are top tier. I never even read the source material, it’s so good.

I have never tried fanfic where I wasn't already familiar with the source material. Did you find it difficult to follow at first?

chiming in to add some mdzs fanfic might be hard to follow at first because of the universe it's set in. i've read fics in fandoms where i didn't consume the source material, but it was fine because i was familiar with the general setting. with mdzs, there's nuances with it being set in ancient china like naming conventions, cultivation sect hierarchy and terminology etc. there's a lot of usage of chinese terms like seniority structures, measures of time, specific locations and what.

that being said, a lot of authors are great about including footnotes explaining anything more complex and you can pick up on reoccurring things pretty easily.

totally agree that the fics for that fandom are great and i've read a lot of good stuff. haven't been in the fandom for ages, but i really enjoyed the fic and art from it.

Not MDZS, but I became obsessed with FF15 pairing (Ignis/Gladio) despite never playing the game. The cast is pretty much a sausage party, so it's no surprise there's so much slash, but the characters also conform to certain tropes that lend well to it. All I had to do was read the FF15 wiki summary and I was good to go.

Never read mdzs fics but most of the ships I get into I almost never know the source material or know it well.

When it's very popular you figure it out eventually. lol

I'd agree with Originaru that that's a lot of nuances for this particular source material if you have no exposure to xianxia/Chinese manhua/c-dramas/ BUT my gateway to this fandom was through a modern AU fanfic lol. And I can't emphasize how top tier the fanfics and the writers in this particular fandom, they do an incredible job introducing the characters, world building and etc. for those with/without prior knowledge.

I've started reading fics without knowing the source material recently and it's pretty fun. I just read the stories like novels and imagine I'm meeting the characters for the first time anyway. It's definitely easier if there's an AU element to it (college AU / Soulmate). You might miss references or nuances but tbh all tropes/ships are the same so it's easy to catch on.

I haven't read the novel, but I watched The Untamed and started reading fic because of a previous Top 100 AO3 ships list 😂
