The Scott's Tots Episode Manifested Itself in Real Life ... and I hate everything about the world

For context: Scott's Tots is an infamous episode from The Office (US version) where Michael Scott has to inform a classroom of young Black students that he can't afford to pay for their tuition because he's still a broke bwah.

College should not cost as much as it does and I find it fucking weird that just when college enrollment started to drop and people started questioning ROI, you started seeing employers requiring BA/BS and Masters degrees in minimum requirements again. No specific flavor! Just the piece of paper.

I really feel bad for these kids especially if they were required to enroll at $$$ tiny lib arts schools. Like fuck, let them do a state school if they want.

Pisses me off especially in the U.K. In England it used to be free. Then (around the time I went) it was around £1,100 a year. Then it was £3,000 something and now it’s like £9,000 or £10,000 per year.

And yet in Scotland it’s still free. And they get free prescriptions.

Our government has royally fucked it.

It absolutely galls me that for an entry level position at fucking sherwin williams they require you to have a bachelors degree.

When I was job hunting in April I remember seeing a listing from them requiring a bachelors degree.

I have a 2-year college diploma, a 4-year university degree, a college postgrad certificate and a masters degree (with an additional certification) and I'm still making less than I should. Part of it is my bad for going into education and working for a charity, but it's so sad that being the manager of a department at a non-profit still has me living paycheque to paycheque.

It's because we let nonprofit DONORS (and boards) get into the mindset that employees should be in their jobs not for the money but because they are that dedicated to the mission they're sacrificing themselves for the cause. It's total bullshit, and I say that as a career nonprofit employee.

https://nonprofitaf.com/2024/05/when-nonprofit-staff-are-paid-so-low-they-qualify-for-their-orgs-services/ is a good blog post about the issue.

The fact that they only got the annual $2500 if they went to a small private school on his list makes me wonder if he was getting some kind of kickback for funneling so many students to these schools. The amount of money he was giving them wasn't enough to cover tuition, so he was getting these kids to sign up for student loans, which really sucks.

Yeah that absolutely crossed my mind. Wow what an easy way to get grant and loan money.

I hate when generations fight over who had it worst but my millennial ass HATES how my Gen X friends didn’t have to deal with fucking student loans like we do. Yes, there are exceptions, blah blah.

I am starting to see a lot of jobs saying something along the lines of “bachelors with 2-3 years experience or 5-8 years experience if no degree” which in theory sounds nice, but what jobs are giving people that experience if they don’t have a degree?

Makes me think of companies who offer unlimited PTO when in the long run it only benefits them.

My last company tried to pull the unlimited PTO trick. At one point, my boss was like “how was it communicated to you Americans? Because management has started calling it ‘flexible PTO’” and I was like oh no absolutely not, they sold it to us as unlimited and I found the announcements and documentation. Apparently people were taking them at their word and taking exactly that, unlimited PTO. And managers were agreeing because we were otherwise worked to the bone in an abusive and chaotic environment.

yes, that's what I'm hearing - that companies use it to make their employees work long hours. Plus they don't have to pay out unused vacation if someone leaves!

my husband makes very good money and we both have MBAs. i didn't work while in school and that gap/lack of experience kept me from even getting interviews. i asked him once if he thought i was capable of learning his job and how long it would take for me to be proficient at it. he said about 2 months. TWO MONTHS to learn a job that is not at all in my skill set and be good at it, that pays enough that i don't need to earn an income and we still live very comfortably with a fat savings account. 2 months. :(
