yep. people genuinely believe that loudest voices on the internet are the general consensus. If I asked the average person about a lot of the online discussions they'd be ?????
Idt they are the majority but the silence of the "kind" voices also contributes to that bc people are far more keen to leave a shitty comment than they are to leave a nice one. something as mundane as 'you look great' or 'beautiful voice' can really make someone's day, yet folks don't really take their time to do that, they drop a like and that's it. meanwhile, if someone posts something they find ugly or annoying, even if it's in NO WAY problematic or affects their day, they will take the time to point out all the "flaws" with that content. I work with social media and lost track of how many times I heard 'it's okay, engagement is engagement' whenever I point out a certain content might not be well received. People are so miserable they genuinely seem to enjoy being mean to others, and as wild as it is, brands capitalize on that misery as well.
I honestly think that majority of people that enjoy things, aren’t wasting time on social media. In my line of work, numbers always show that something I did was doing extremely well but if you go by comments, you’d think I did something shitty that wasn’t selling since negative, miserable people always want to feel like their opinions matter because more often than not, nobody gives a fuck about what they have to say in real life.
This is such a wonderful insight. You're right that there's not as much positivity being shared, online or in real life. I used to make it a goal to pay at least one compliment a day, preferably to a stranger because I knew how much that could make my day. I should bring that back.
Not only is engagement, engagement but misery really does love company.
I have had some difficult times and comments from fellow ontders are my cherished sea pebbles. Because even though it didn't cost them much, they still chose to pause whatever else they were doing to say good things to me, when I literally had nobody to talk to. It's very important and you are absolutely right, could make someone's day. It's contagious too. I enjoy seeing somebody having a sane conversations here even when I am not a part of it.
idc i'm still in my tumblr era and it feels a lot more come-and-go than other social media that's more like we're parked here waiting to get mad or fawn like we've lost all sense of how vowels work
I know why I'm still here but why are you?
