I’ve been on Wegovy for a while as I just wasn’t losing weight like I used to be able to (now thinking it’s probably related to perimenopause… yay hormones). I also did 23&me and it showed I was at a higher risk of things including diabetes, cholesterol issues, coronary artery disease… it felt like it was time to try something new after years of dieting, exercise and failure.

The side effects have changed over time with using it. At first it was constipation (but nothing some off the shelf stool softeners couldn’t fix), but after a while it changed to more nausea and a bit of diarrhoea. It’s manageable for me - the nausea tends to be worst first thing in the morning, and usually settles down after I eat a little something. The benefits have definitely outweighed the side effects - I’ve lost almost 49 lbs, and my BMI is almost back to within the normal range - when I started I was classed as obese. I feel much healthier in myself.

One surprising benefit has been it’s really turned me off of alcohol, and a lot of people have reported addictions disappearing with use too. Been an easy way to drastically cut back on empty calories.

I've heard people anecdotally say it helped with their shopping compulsions, too, which seems really interesting to explore from a medical perspective.

Anecdotally, I'm having the same experience - compulsive behavior drastically reduced. I really hope this is studied and can be used for addiction, without producing weight loss in people who wouldn't need that part.

I'm happy for you! And, yes, I hope people are exploring this.

i am really fascinated by reports of peoples addictions no longer having a hold on them [gambling, alcohol, other drugs, shopping etc]. i am super curious what the reason for that would be.

GLP-1 drugs reduce the release of dopamine in the striatum, so drinking, bingeing, gambling shopping etc. don't hit as hard anymore.

Ha, I knew it had to be dopamine related! Which would also hint at some hidden ADHD with self medication via alcohol etc.

It’s so interesting. I also had a casual vaping habit but I’ve stopped that now too. I just don’t want it. I still get the occasional craving but food noise and feeling like I need a few drinks at the end of a long day are basically gone.

i love this for you! would you say that healthful or positive ways of spending time/getting dopamine have been affected at all?

Thank you sm bb!

Hmmmmm, it's hard for me to say for sure as I do have underlying anxiety/depression and perimenipause so my dopamine ain't exactly dopamining anyway, lmao.

I still do things I enjoy, like hiking, gaming, painting, self-defence classes, etc. so I've not lost the motivation to do those so much which is good. I would say I used to spontaneously pick up hobbies a lot more - like I'd always be trying something new, and that has gone a little (which isn't a bad thing - I'd spend a lot of money investing in potential new hobbies). I was always a bit ballsy and a risk taker too, and I'd say maybe that has been tempered (which is good and bad, I guess - good in that maybe its physically safer, but bad in that I'm not always as confident as I feel I have been in the past maybe?).

I do still have a drink or two here and there but I don't crave it, and after maybe 3 drinks I'm usually done and switch to soft drinks/water. I rarely drink at home anymore. I have zero desire to vape though - even thinking of the taste of it I find really off-putting and it makes me kind of nauseous.
