Did Jodie (Turner) Smith allegedly run a scam while she was at University? Allegedly, Allegedly

Jul 27, 2024 13:30

So, it starts with this tweet by Laci Mosley - known for the podcast Scam Goddess which ONTD loves very much and highly recommends. Laci says

My mom is an AKA I’m not because Jodie turner smith (long story) but they are hoppin on calls with political leaders in 2 hours. The girls are MOBILIZING. Hahaha

It turns out this story has been shared before by other black students from Pittsburgh. Laci and JTS both went to University of Pittsburgh at different times. JTS graduated in 2008 - can't find a record of what year Laci graduated but she is 4 years younger than Jodie. So, lets rewind back to October 2023.

jodie turner smith was expelled from the akas for being a classist, scammed bully and that's another reason why they jumped her

You know it is bad when a sorority expels someone for being a classist and a bully. The user provides evidence of Jodie Turner-Smith being listed as expelled.

So what happened? Apparently, Jodie Smith as she was then known pretended to be an active member of an AKA Iota chapter and collected money from prospective members. Laci attended the University long after Jodie had left, but Laci couldn't follow in her mum's footsteps and join the AKAs because the chapter was dissolved. It seems the chapter was a mess anyway -  the H-word mentioned below is hazing.

For the people in the thread and quotes, she got expelled because she was collecting money from potential interests while pretending to be an active member of the Iota chapter. This was exposed years ago by alumni and someone wrote a book about h word allegations. https://t.co/SH9XpQzpak

This person seems to have known her at the time.

I will always appreciate Jodie for putting me on to FOCUS cause that led to me meeting most of my best friends from Pitt....

....But I would be VERY surprised if she ever showed her face in Pittsburgh again after that AKA situation. LAWD. https://t.co/9zliVwbfrm

She got Pitt's AKA chapter suspended for years cause she was hazing and scamming people. One of them ended up writing a book about it.

So there's a book out there about hazing in the AKAs which covers Jodie Smith being a scammer?! - fuck that damn curtain  - can one of the reddit sleuths move this to the top of the list and find the book for us please?

I really want make a Joanne Jodie the scammer joke

The fall out...Boule is the periodical assembly of the AKA members.

SIS!! We went to Boule and begged for the chapter to be reinstated, miss mamas and her friends did too much damage. Someone wrote a BOOK about it and I know people in the damn book 😭🤣💀
- SCAM GODDESS (@DivaLaci) July 22, 2024

Nah I just got the fallout. AKA’s were banned at Pitt we went to Boule did everything we could to get them reinstated. What they did was so egregious we couldn’t get a single letter chapter (Iota), back off the ground.

I'm, not American, so sorority culture is foreign to me. I hope I have done this justice.

edited the post to include two more tweets I just spotted.

Here is the book

Captain of My Soul: A Memoir

In 2007, I was a young and naive college sophomore. My main concern was being selected to join a prestigious black sorority. Although I was initially apprehensive due to rumors of hazing and pledging, I soon embraced those rumors, wholeheartedly believing that being hazed would make me appreciate membership even more. I was selected with a group of nine other girls, under the assumption that after pre-pledging for a few weeks in the spring of 2008, we would pledge in the fall. Yet, after twenty weeks of pre-pledging--buying food for sorority members, cleaning their houses, attending countless late night "study sessions"--I was no closer to being a member of the sorority. Instead of attending a pinning ceremony in the fall of 2008, I found myself in a hearing against the sorority, relaying exactly what had happened over those twenty weeks. [Captain of My Soul was first published July 24, 2009]
