My son wants to be a baker. He is still pretty young, but he consistently wanted to be a baker for a few years now, and does take any opportunity to learn to bake something new.

I am supportive now ofcourse, but it does not seem like a profession with a linear path to financial security.

Talula's baked goods look cute. Best of luck to her!

No profession is a guarantee or linear path to financial security. If anything, this will grant him a head for business, numbers, and chemistry for dealing with exact amounts, all that chemical stuff about why things react, and managing inventory and business. Those are good skills he can use in a variety of places.

He’ll make money otherwise then, or get another job and bake on the side if it doesn’t work out. Passion is a driving force in life and shouldn’t be discouraged imo

My cousin manages a Publix bakery and I was surprised how decent her income is. She works crazy hours though.

I worked at Publix during the pandemic and I agree....I did like that they offered us health insurance even working part time.

A pastry chef can always find work.

I say support him pursue baking/cooking in the future if he wants while also remind him to study for something at the same time. That way, he has a backup plan.

Anna Olsen got 2 university degrees and worked at a bank before she pursued and became a pastry chef. She has always liked baking. I remembered her telling her story in her baking show years ago about her working and then quitting to go to culinary school.

Also with social media and YouTube, I see many people who supplement their income with making cooking videos to build up an audience and then publishing their cookbook. Just don't invest in it too much at the start. Jimmy O Yang, a comedian, posts cooking videos occasionally because he likes cooking. I used to watch them before I got bored because he put more money into the show to make it fancy.
