I know the Baldwins are pretty dysfunctional so maybe this sentiment doesn’t really apply to her situation but I hate how normalized it is to devalue all of the relationships with your family and friends when you enter into a romantic relationship. It’s encouraged even! I’ll die on the hill that it’s never healthy to make one person your entire universe

I feel like sometimes it gives off red flags too, since it could be a case of the partner isolating them on purpose. (Not always though)

I don't disagree, you should be your own complete, whole self no matter how long you've been in a relationship. I grew up in a pretty dysfunctional family that always made it them vs. the person I was dating, so I definitely get where Hailey is coming from. After a couple of failed relationships, I finally understood that my parents were just going to hate anyone I was dating because it meant that I was living a life apart from their enmeshment and control. I 100% prioritize myself and my husband now.

BUT I definitely understand your point, and I think the healthiest family units will allow room for both. My aunt and uncle vacation with their kids and their kids' girlfriends, which I think is so sweet!

It’s also interesting to me cuz I feel like with marriages the husband is usually the one who frequents their family less and they kind of just join their wives’ families. At least in what I’ve seen around me, guys seem less attached to their parents. This is the opposite, but maybe her family really is the worst, even to her, and if that’s the case, do you Hailey!

I agree about not making one person your entire life. Though I do find it refreshing how open people are about going NC/LC with family. There are abused children and teens out there in fucked up family dynamics who need to know that the family you were born into is not necessarily going to be the family you end up with, and that it is possible to create a family that loves one another.

that's essentially what ethical non monogamy is about yet most people act like it's about being free to fuck anyone with genitals and holes. all our relationships are valuable and they don't suddenly become secondary simply because a romantic partner has entered your life.

I agree. Maybe she wants to separate from her super religious family. Still if her marriage fell apart she may need the support one day.
