This is what really took the air out of their sails. The shooter wasn't a left wing guy who was anti-Trump, he was a conservative gun nut who was likely an accelerationist. The GOP can't blame the Dems when the guy was on their side.

Right now they are hammering the head of the Secret Service so, if anything, they might go with a conspiracy theory that the dude was some sleeper agent for Biden but that will only fly with the fringiest of the fringe within the GOP.

i don't remember where i heard it but the indifference comes from the fact that it's absolutely not surprising to magats that someone tried to kill him. he's always the victim of conspiracies against him in all areas of his life, so this is just another example of that and not shocking at all to them.
