It's funny because while that's a true statement, that's not at all what I took from this movie.

It was more like "I been telling you all this time who I am and you never listened". And I think it's a great film except for the last 10 minutes.

People wanted to demonize Summer bc poor JGL but she was pretty upfront the whole time. I was satisfied with the park scene, especially when she says she woke up one day and knew what she was never sure of with him. It’s brutal, but it’s truly that simple.

Was she though? She actually sent a lot of mixed signals.. and the reason she wanted to stop seeing him is because she found someone ~better in her eyes. It wasn't that she never wanted a relationship.. she just didn't want it with him. And she did string him along. You don't do boyfriend/girlfriend things with people and expect them not to catch feelings or think you might actually feel something too. She was shitty. He knew what she was doing and allowed it. Neither party is innocent.

I never said she was innocent but Tom wasn’t a helpless victim, he chose to see the person he wanted (as the montage shown in different contexts so wonderfully shows) and got screwed over when the MPDG didn’t want to go along with his fantasy. Anyone with common sense should know that, while people may not want relationships, it all comes down to compatibility. You could be dead set on being single yet if a genuinely good match comes along, you’ll likely reevaluate your stance but if someone says they don’t want/aren’t ready for a relationship, believe them. But Tom, like so many people out there, wanted to delude himself that his dazzling personality and magic dick would change Summer’s mind, and he was in for a rude awakening when he realized that nope, it didn’t.

Also, the idea that relationships need to “go somewhere” is generally just baffling to me like, just live the moment while it makes sense and as long as it makes you happy instead of chasing some idiotic boyfriend/girlfriend label.

She did had feelings for him but wasn't sure and always said it, and Tom projected all his fantasies onto her regardless.
