Vance’s small rural town in Ohio, Middletown, isn’t even rural.

Its population is over 50k.

His hillbilly schtick was a lie from the jump. #whiteruralinterloper

Also fuck Ron Howard for making that movie despite everyone knowing at the time the entire book was bullshit attention-seeking.
eta I just remembered I fell for the grift when the book came out and I def own it on Audible. And I read it. Even before he was a political social climber, I gave it two stars and said "I don't have any time for a guy claiming to be a hillbilly (he's not, let's be honest) deriding the plight of the working poor and saying payday loans are good."

I bought it when it first came out because I thought for some reason it was going to be sympathetic to the poor. I never got around to reading it and then I heard what it was really about and learned more and more about him (unwillingly), and years later I’m still mad I spent that $30 on that book.

Oh, it was definitely NOT sympathetic. If anything, he blamed the poor for being poor, it's their own damn fault they're poor.

Yeah but when it first came out I’m sure that’s not how it was marketed, it was definitely implied that it would be some kind of sympathetic-ish reveal of a group of people most of us knew little about blah blah blah. I guess because most of those kind of books are like human stories that give context to the complexities of the lives of others, and the early critic reviews kind of said that without saying “but he thinks they all suck and they brought it on themselves”.

You just have to lift yourselves up by your bootstraps and join the Marines and win the luck jackpot and then sell your soul to Peter Thiel and you're good to go!

I want to see a reality show where all these bootstrap people are forced to swap lives with the people they judge and left to figure it out for like two years. Let’s see how judgy they are then.

At least you can sell or give your copy away; I made the mistake of buying it as an ebook.

I bought it for similar reasons as you but ended up not reading it for the same reasons. Plus, I grew up poor and my dad was from Appalachia.

I put it in one of those little libraries a couple of years ago. I should have just chucked it in the bin and not inflicted it on anyone else.
