Even ten years ago, I thought this was a dumb idea 😂. I loved all the ball pit memes that came out of it though.

Tumblr has basically become purity hell. If you like darker things, basically dead dove; do not eat kind of shit, you're an awful person, problematic and deserve to die. And if you re-blog something from someone who (usually anon) has decided is an awful person, you are also awful and deserve to die. Even if you don't follow the person who made the actual post

Basically, if it's not pure and cute and happy, you deserve to die. I miss when tumblr was super fucking weird and not a dick measuring contest on who cares the most.

YES THANK YOU! I just mentioned that above! The purity fuckery is insane over there. The amount of times I've reblogged something about the subject and I go to read the the tags & reblogs to see those exact people in there still going "yeah but no seriously if you write/read this or enjoy x character, literally burn in hell"

I think what makes it worse is that a lot of the time its not just young people with that opinion.

Liking horror movies doesn't mean I want to go out and murder a bunch of teenagers camp counselors for having premarital sex

Then they'll tag the character they hate and get angry when people are like 'hey, if you hate the character, don't tag them, people who follow the tag don't want to see that'

And then they'll call anyone over 20 a pedo and weirdo for writing fanfiction or cartoons or anything fun. Kids, who do you think is writing your favorite fics? It's not the 15 year old!

I swear people also overshare and basically dox themselves as well. We've got 15 year olds there saying their name, age and state (sometimes city) in their bio.

Dude right?! "Don't Like, Don't Read" has been a slogan in the fanfic and fandom spaces for years. It's literally what it says. There's plenty of stuff I wouldn't read and I don't give a shit who reads it or why. It's not for me, there's plenty of stuff out there that is! The way they spend so much time actively going to people's pages to give them shit. You never see us wading into their spaces but they LOVE coming into ours.

OMFG don't get me started on that view on Ao3!!! That is literally, genuinely, the WHOLE reason it exists! It is the definition of a safe space. It's so easy to avoid the things you don't want to see?? It's built near perfectly for that!

An online friend (who I met on tumblr) fully ghosted me last year because I dared to say I liked a character who isn't an upstanding citizen. And yes, this person was an adult and in my age group. It's a mindset that's alive and well, unfortunately.

This really fucked up my ability to write. I basically struggle to write villainous characters now because i got myself into such a knot about being viewed as "problematic" for not having all of my characters be "good" or "pure" somehow. Now I just build lovely worlds and create fun premises and then fail to commit to any conflict. it's really good fun, i hate it.

Fandom used to be so much fun. Now it's just a circle jerk of who is the least problematic and who can do more dumb call outs over something that was probably nothing problematic to begin with. I'm sorry it's become like that for you, people ruin everything.

I'm in the ao3 subreddit and the comments people leave on some of these fics! Especially when it's tagged with all the tags and they STILL get angry. Or that a character wouldn't do something like that (when it's tagged AU). It seems like some people don't know what fan fiction is really all about. It doesn't have to follow canon!

Anyways, I just realized I have 5 AO3 invites left! So if someone wants one, lmk! Just promise not to leave hate comments on how you hate a fic and the author should die because of it!

This reminds me of when people tried to come for Hannibal fanfic & fanart. Like...HANNIBAL of all media.
