I think he was recast because of scheduling. Or that’s what the article I read said. But I wouldn’t blame him if he didn’t want to go back.

So the scene Alec was rehearsing at the time of the shooting was a scene where Jensen’s character is supposed to get shot. It was a rehearsal and they seemed to be figuring out the exact shots camera wise for Alec for the scene so Jensen was outside or off to the side at the time of the tragic shooting. I saw part of his police interview about it when it was floating around on Twitter. I wouldn’t be surprised if that played into the decision not to return.

The excuse given was scheduling, but my deep suspicion is he'd have never gone back regardless. He's used to handling guns from SPN so I doubt he would made Alec's mistakes when it came to firing his own prop, but Alec was supposed to be firing at him. It could very easily have been him dead on the floor. There's no way in hell I'd go back to that set after that

Yeah, the scene was Alec's character shooting Jensen's. I can't imagine how that was for Jensen - your colleague dying on set is traumatic enough without the knowledge it might've been you.

It could've easily been him. They were shooting/rehearsing in the morning during which time the gun (that we now know was loaded) was pointed at him. From the way he talked it sounded a lot like his wife reacted quite badly to the entire situation.
