George Clooney urges Joe Biden to step down as the 2024 Democratic nominee for president in a new op-ed:

“We are not going to win in November with this president. On top of that, we won’t win the House, and we’re going to lose the Senate. This isn’t only my opinion; this is the… pic.twitter.com/EArMreTtMk

RIGHT. I don't like Biden, I don't want him as President now or a second time, but holy shit this rhetoric is going to cause so much chaos. And don't get me wrong-- he DOES need to step down. But the fracas that will result from that might just cost us the election.

Do you think that him stepping down will be less chaos then him staying on? As he makes gaffe after gaffe, his campaign flounders and everyone's staring down the barrel of a fascist America?

I think it won't causes much chaos if he steps down AND give a strong endorsement to Harris. Then it'll be like "Biden saved democracy in 2020 by beating Trump and saved democracy again by passing the torch. And he was a great President, what a great career, let's all celebrate him at the Convention!" And then the Biden delegates will obey his wishes and nominate Kamala and Dems have a shot.

America is too anti Black to elect a Black woman as president tbh, they will never elect if Harris is the front runner

It's a fair concern and point, but they're also never electing a senile Octogenarian who looks like he's ready for the nursing home. I'd say America is also very ageist except frankly all the Biden concerns are well-founded.

I'd vote for a corpse over Trump but the fact that the media is now saying 24/7 that Biden needs to step aside is giving even ME pause. It's even on NPR. It's hard to remain calm when everyone around you is panicking

We SHOULD be panicking. Project 2025 is fucking Handmaid's Tale. Biden is so far refusing to step down and he WILL lose. He cannot communicate anymore. He can't prosecute a case against Trump anymore. Even pre-debate he was getting his ass KICKED in the swing states + even some blue states. He cannot turn it around. If he doesn't step down, Trump wins. Facism wins.

Republican House. Republican Senate. Donald Trump presidency. 6-3 wacko conservative SCOTUS. The 3 most powerful people in America will be Donald Trump, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas.

This is a 5-Alarm Fire. America hasn't been in this much danger since 1865. It's terrifying and we should be honest about that.

I think it will look like desperate scrambling if Biden steps down and will completely undo what little faith some people still have in the Democrats. Maybe if I were a political scholar I'd know differently. I was listening to someone comparing Biden to LBJ and the problem being Johnson was unpopular because of his policy but Biden is unpopular as a person, which supposedly makes it more likely that another Democrat could step in and do better than McCarthy did against Nixon. There's also a lot of disgusting people who simply would not tolerate a non-white woman like Harris as president. It's an incredibly complicated situation with no precedent.

Stick with Biden, Trump wins. Switch things up, Trump might not.

Messy? It depends. If Biden gives a full-throated endorsement of the new nominee it won't be that messy. A little messy if that nominee isn't Kamala tbh, not really messy at all if he's just elevating her when she's already on the ticket.

This is exactly my thought. This is going to make things so much worse. STFU, Clooney; if you’re so concerned speak with him privately but don’t make things easier for Tr*mp by sowing greater lack of trust.

Biden could be asleep for the next four years and I’d still vote for him. Let everyone around him do the work, I don’t fucking care, but the other guy is an existential threat to this country and a personal threat to me and I’d vote for a sentient tadpole if it meant saving us from that fate.
