Speaking as a Gotochi Kitty collector, you can still eventually buy this kind of exclusive merch outside of Japan... you just have to learn to navigate Mercari.jp 👀 it helps to use a browser that auto-translates too. And obviously you have to search in Japanese (ハローキティ = Hello Kitty).

The only downside is shipping from Japan outside of Asia is always steep. I probably spend more on shipping costs than actual item costs.

Aside from Mercari.jp: Rakuten Marketplace, Yahoo JP Auction, and Mandarake.co.jp are other viable options.

There are also tons of people in Japan who will do a shopping service for you… it’s pretty easy to find small shopping services on Instagram these days.

I've heard of the shopping services but haven't tried them yet myself. Are they reputable?

I like the secondhand marketplaces like Mercari and Rakuten Marketplace because every seller on there is verified and the items are almost always in mint condition for being pre-owned (sometimes still in the original packaging).

It depends, but generally yeah. I like using small services that are usually one person who does it as a side hustle which obviously carries more risk but I also think they generally try harder to get things… Often they only do shopping for brands they’re familiar with or have a particular interest in, so I can trust that they’re going to get the right thing or try harder to get it because they understand how desirable it is.

On the other hand there are bigger multi-employee shopping services which are absolutely reputable in the sense that they’re not going to steal your money, but I also have had less luck with them actually finding rare things or getting the limited items that you have to line up for.

So it’s a little bit of a gamble either way, but I think it’s generally worth it if there’s a new release you have to have.

Seconding buyee for proxy services.

It's got the best rates for sure, though it still twinges to pay $20+ shipping for something that only cost 500¥. 🥲

I find it's best to wait until I have a few bigger things I want, so I can consolidate packaging. But damn if every little charge doesn't add up quick...

zenmarket and buyee are what I use. Just bout a few things yesterday, ZM is having 17% off shipping until the 27th, I think? I'm anxious awaiting that shipping price tag 😭

I use buyee since it's coupled with Mercari.jp (where I usually get my gotochi) and usually has the best shipping rates, but if zenmarket has a competitive deal I will def switch over! (I've been eyeing this maitake Gotochi Kitty: https://jp.mercari.com/en/item/m50197869187 👀)

I'd say the prices are pretty much the same, ZM does have discounts on shipping often though! Buyee does have a lower purchasing cost though, they're 300 yen while ZM is 500. It's basically whichever one you like the best.

also peer pressure, BUY IT! it's cute as hell!!

I learned about the Sanrio Decora Pop collection last week and bought something from someone on ebay who is going back to Japan around this time (but they bought a bunch of stuff back and sold it at a lot cheaper than other people) maybe I'll see what they can find if there is Chococat / Pom stuff.
