It's like her or her team tried to build a comeback/rebrand intended to capture the attention of younger queer audiences but forgot the tiny detail that said audiences are mostly chronically online and therefore up to date with these types of scandals that run-of-the-mill celebrities tend to brush past.

This. It's like they are not thinking things through and miscalculated. I really don't know how Katy can justify this to herself, let alone others about this. Like...

i do think it should be noted that a lot of those girls who do work with luke - either willingly or bc they're signed to his label - do have their fans bc they have an air of idgaf-ness about them. they also weren't promoting music they make as female empowerment anthems, they made bops and there is a huge audience that will forgive you as long as you make bops.

katy has always been a fairly earnest and goofy pop star, so her playing on that y2k-wannabe look fits badly and the song isn't good so people aren't bothering to try with it.

Would younger queer audiences like this cheesy song even if it wasn't produced by doctor Luke? Those lyrics are so... mommy blogger from a decade ago.

I didn't want to bring generational differences into it but yeah, it's all very "elder millenial tries to appeal to gen z" lmao

All the stay-at-home moms in my neighborhood love Katy. They play her music as their kids play and while they’re exercising. They have her and La Diabla on the same playlists like they didn’t hate each other for years😂

She should stick to the non-offensive inspirational pop that boring people feel comfortable playing in the background as their kids play, like P!nk’s newer stuff, or the Fight Song lady.

*lol I should add that I am, in fact, one of those boring people. I join them with my baby on the weekends bc he needs to socialize and they’re really sweet women. I just unfortunately can’t afford not to work 🤷🏽‍♀️

She's basically been in the "she's someone's mother" category of celebrity even before she became a mother - pop culture writes those women as one-mind focused, and their best years are behind them, and while some of that has an ounce of truth (seriously look at your parent friends even on here and see if they talk about something other than their families or kids or job), she walked right into the box and closed the door.

she either needs to stop trying or bring on a team of younger people who know how to capture the zeitgeist bc it’s cringe atp 😭

I think her best bet would be the first option. Keep making music, but stop trying to appeal to an audience you can't satisfy... just make the music you wanna make.

Reminds me of Pink. She's got a style/core audience and sticks with it even if it's not necessarily going to attract new listeners.

I think the problem is that Katy doesn't really have a creative identity. She got lucky and unlucky with Teenage Dream bc it was HUGE but also impossible to escape or replicate. She's been spinning her wheels for over ten years now and this is where she's ended up.

The reports are that her team really discouraged this collaboration. This is all on Katy.
