Part of early 2000s television culture was for the fandom to just absolutely despise one female character for no reason and then often it was made out that the actress was horrible, etc. (The other version of this is to HATE the main will they/won’t they couple in the show and to say you’d like to see more of ‘boring storyline/random side character’ instead to show how above it all you are).
Often I find when I watch a show now that I didn’t watch when it aired, I’ll be like, ‘wait why was there such a hatred for this character/the actress? She’s fine’.
Alternatively, usually if the character isn’t great it’s often because the writing for her is bad and that’s usually because (male oriented) writer rooms aren’t great at writing teen girls, wives, etc.
(The exception to all this is April from Gilmore Girls who was truly awful in every way).
