TikTok confirms US 'kill switch' offer https://t.co/xC91B564FQ
- BBC News (World) (@BBCWorld) June 21, 2024

- Tiktok says it offered the US government the option to have the power to shut down the platform in order to address security concerns
- It made the offer in 2022 but disclosed it as it attempts to fight the ban Joe Biden signed a few months ago forcing ByteDance to dispense US assets or face a ban
- The ban was signed into law after concerns that data belonging to its 170 million US users could be passed to the Chinese government
- Tiktok denies it shares any US users date with the Chinese government
- TikTok says the mechanism would have allowed the government the "explicit authority to suspend the platform in the United States at the US government's sole discretion" if it did not follow certain rules.
- Tiktok says the US government 'ceased any substantive negotiations' and ignored any requests for meetings
