It's truly hard to pick because he had such a varied and interesting career. Not to lean too much into recency bias, but I will always deeply appreciate what he brought to President Snow in the Hunger Games. It would have been so easy to just file the whole thing under "generic teen dystopia" and phone it in but instead he was genuinely enthusiastic about it, took the role seriously, and delivered an incredible performance.

Dirty Dozen. He was super young, but already so great.

I was really dreading this knowing he'd become a man of a certain age and yet still feels like a shock to hear it. He was top tier and beloved. When I heard, I knew I'd be reaching for my Criterion copy of Don't Look Now tonight. :( RIP

it's hard for me to narrow his career down to a specific fave because he's done so much great work in so many genres, but i love the playfulness and suspiciousness and depth and love he brought to mr. bennett in the 2005 pride and prejudice. it's so easy to phone that role in, and many have, but his mr. bennett is so memorable and warm.

His way of playing Mr. Bennett seemed so sweet and tender.

his Mr Bennet fully understood that, much as he loves his family, he has to preserve his sanity by trolling them sometimes

but i loved him in M*A*SH*
