It's fine. Alan Alda famously refused to sign autographs, but would chat with a fan instead. Partly because one of Robert Alda's fans once ran up to Robert and punched him.

So he thinks he won’t be punched if he talks to people instead of signing an autograph? Doesn’t affect me either way but I think the logic is flawed

The only thing I can think of is that if a fan takes a photo with someone and then immediately posts it to social media, other eagle eyed fans online could be able to track the real time location of the celeb.

I met Ruth Negga backstage after Macbeth in 2022, and was so shy and gabbling about how much I loved her performance in the play and how I've loved her since Breakfast on Pluto (to which she laughed, "that's a really long while!"), and I only ended up getting an autograph and a pic with her because *she* insisted on it lol. She was so kind and friendly to a nerd like me. 🥲🫣

Paul Scheer (from the How Did This Get Made podcast amongst numerous bit parts)talks about a story in his book where when he was a kid, he went up to Alan Alda to ask for his autograph and Alan said no. He then said "If you can name three things I've been in besides MASH, I'll give you the autograph."
He was getting the autograph for his grandma so he didn't know.
