ontd original: YouTube Channels You Should Visit (That are small)

Jun 18, 2024 15:57

I want to see these channels grow. They're under 200k, some even under 20k subscibers.

All numbers as of about 6/16/2024

I know that video essays scare ya'll, so I selected videos that are more than likely under 30 minutes.

You know how people do deep dives on culture and things from the 90s and before? Well this guy does it about things in the mid 2000s and beyond. Short and easily digestible, they may remind of you of times you remember fondly - or would rather forget. Like Axe's marketing!

A Grain of Salt (18.5k)

The wry delivery matched with clipart animation makes me laugh. Very short videos about stuff you might know about.

Yes, they do talk about Katy Perry and the Nuns, but this video is my favorite about the origins and endings of the Buckwheat Boyz.

This is kind of a niche subject. Carrying on from the Y2K era, this guy (I don't think he names himself at all), talks about technology that we used back then that we use today, but it was often "higher end" back then. This video I linked is probably the most approachable one, but if you want to learn, it's an engaging channel.

He also dragged the shit out of the genreal idea of capitalism and pointed out in a latest video deconstructing a cop car computer that he really didn't enjoy taking something apart that contributed to our police state.

Poparena (27.7k)

They are recapping every Nickelodeon show, but sometimes take paid breaks (and you should pay them something) to look quickly at a certain episode. This one is about a Spongebob episode you probably know, but is apparently no longer on streaming.

Atop The Fourth Wall (or Atop the 4th Wall) - 146k

One of the original people on Ch*nnel A*esome (and you know I hate self-censoring so this is serious), also has the honor of being the creator I have followed the second longest (The longest has somewhere in the 400k range so he doesn't get a mention).

Focuses on comic books and occaionally modern media (A Patreon requested a review of an episode of Dunegeon Meshi and he agreed). This episode is one of about 8 of the Tandy Computer Whiz Kids (Tandy used to be a computer brand bought by Radio Shack!)

I had to ask for help with this (ty mizzyoung) bc the rest of the post was a (semi)-sausagefest - the one lady I wanted to include has about 400k) -  but I did check out a few videos and appreciate a Black woman talking about y2k as well. Here's a history of Bratz (which I did not know about!)

Pleeease name your small youtubers you want to support! I used a limit of 200k subscribers or less but honestly I can't stop you from saying whoever.
