Refusing the breathalyzer is the smart move actually because it’s usually the one piece of actual tangible evidence they can use against you in court.

I’ve seen people get off because the cop fucked up their testimony and they didn’t have the breathalyzer.

In Australia the breathalyzer is only indicative, they're not reliable enough to prosecute on so they have to follow up with a blood test. So if you refuse the breathalyzer you may be able to get your blood alcohol lower by the time they can get you to a blood test in the next hour or so.

Yeaaaah here if you refuse a breathalyzer (without a valid reason and I'm pretty sure they are going to shred whatever reason you have to bits in court) they treat it the same as if you had a BAC of 0,16. And at that point the consequences are worse than if you had just taken the breathalyzer and lived with whatever came after.
