These links really capture the evolution in views about DUIs I've noticed in my own circle over the years. Previously, in cases where no one was hurt, the drunk/high driver didn't cause an accident or damage property, and admitted wrongdoing (with or without a plea deal), the most critical response was usually just that the person had hopefully learned from it and wouldn't do it again. Otherwise, very similar to the "oh well, so-and-so is attractive/is a good person/didn't mean it!" Now, people are a lot more critical (rightfully, I think) and will question why it even happened in the first place. Hopefully, we will eventually get to a place where actual punishments (not just slaps on the wrist) are consistently handed out for people who drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
yep. when i was a teen/young 20s, i was a selfish dick and never thought twice about driving drunk. my sons are in their early/mid twenties and they've always hated people who drive under the influence, so i definitely can see the difference between the way the generations view it. there are always outliers in every generation but it's really nice to see people aren't assholes about impaired driving as much as they used to be (or so it seems to me).
if someone kills someone while drunk driving, they get such light sentences it's disgusting. i think all crimes should be punished according to how the victim's life was changed. life altering incident? life altering sentence.
