The last two times I went to go donate blood, my iron levels were just below minimum required and they keep telling me that I need to eat red meat but I just can't acquire the taste for it! I tried eating all the veggies that have iron but I can only have so much of that. (yeah yeah I know, I should probably go to the doctor and see what's up)

I love beef jerky. I think I could eat it all day, everyday. It is just so damn expensive!

Like, I could buy a pound of ground beef or a steak for not much more.

I don't understand why it is so damn expensive. It always has been.

So I'm hindu so I don't eat beef. Ok technically I can because my family is a very relaxed type of Hindu, but I just hate the flavor of any type of red meat that I've had. People have told me that I'm probably not having the good quality stuff but I'm not about to pay loads for something I might not enjoy

What about pork jerky? Or are you still running into that flavor thing

I've never tried it tbh. I've grown up on an Indian diet so lots of at home food. Meat is like something I treat myself to 3 or 4 times a month

Just take iron supplements! I had low iron levels as I eat a majority plant-based diet (fully at home with occasional fish outside of the home - about 2 times a month) and just started on supplements.

Yeah I think that's what I have to do. One of the grandma's that comes in to donate has amazingly high and healthy levels of iron. All the nurses asked her how she did it and she said she takes the kids Flinstone vitamins before she comes in.

I had that problem too, but I started eating oatmeal every day and I haven't had problems since! Marmite also had a lot of iron but not everyone likes it. Nutritional yeast is another good one!

so you drink green tea? that can lower your iron.

No, I've never drank green tea in my life so that can't be the issue. She did tell me to stay away from that though because it blocks iron absorption

some people just have low hemoglobin, welcome to the club. they don't let me donate blood anymore since they upped the threshold. supplements can help, as can seasoning (I have a fondness for taco-beef)

I know people use cast iron to cook to get the iron in or those iron fishes in soup.

But iron supplement in pill is great. I had to take them a few times. They're pricey after awhile though.

ohhh this is actually a good idea. I think I've just been intimidated by cast iron because of the upkeep required to keep it clean and seasoned. I've been taking supplements. If these dont work then the doctor is getting a visit
