You would think her doctor would be more empathetic to what she wanted in regard to her reconstruction JFC.

Especially since I was under the impression that a skilled surgeon can “shape” your breasts to look as natural or artificial as someone wants?

I think that's true if it's just a regular implant but it's probably harder with a reconstruction when you already have scar tissue.

Seriously. He basically said "yeah, we're going to do a bad job and make you look fake"??

That is not at all how I interpreted that.

No I think he was telling her that having to rebuild breasts rather than making an incision in existing tissue was going to look like a “bolt-on” no matter what.

oh come on. a huge part pf this I think is managing expectations. she didnt have any tissue almost so ofc its going to look fake with implants and just skin basically. they clearly did their best.

Not really, he was just honest with her. As a doctor you shouldn't promise things you can't keep.

IA - I didn’t take it as the doctor being cold and insensitive but more what they most likely can achieve without giving false hope/ expectations.

He or she didn’t said that. You don’t know exactly what the doctor said. Olivia is just making emphasis on the fact that the doctor was upfront and honest with her to not set her up for failure and in the end, even though the doctor didn’t hyped up the results, she was pleased with it and exceeded her initial expectations. Doctor’s have to be this way to avoid misunderstandings and potential law suits as some patients may tend to create an unrealistic expectation in their mind, specially where cosmetic procedures are involved.

she had a double mastectomy. there was no existing breast tissue to cover the implant and help make it look natural.

They can only do so much with your natural anatomy, like if your breasts naturally fall to the sides so will the implants, or if you have zero fat on your chest, no matter how small, they will look like implants. Reconstructive breast surgery probably adds even more limitations.

I had implants done with a reconstructive surgeon bc I had lost a lot of weight and my tissue was very weak and he was worried about it being able to hold up. My convo with my surgeon was not too dissimilar tbh, he was blunt but honest about what was achievable and that it may not be exactly what I wanted, although he would try to do the best he could to give me the result I was imagining. My tissue was so weak that he had to use alloderm, which is a mesh sheet, to create a shelf under the implants to support them. I didn’t want “porn star boobs” but he basically was like unfortunately they do have to be higher on your chest. In the end, I deferred to him and his expertise and told him that he had carte blanche to do whatever he needed to do in there and he created a beautiful chest for me that I never would have imagined possible, and it was a better result than what I thought I wanted tbh, even if they are perkier than I would have maybe chosen for myself.

I’m lucky in that I’ve never been in this kind of situation, but I would much rather have a surgeon who was straightforward and frank than one who got my hopes up

100%! After the consult I wasn’t sure how I felt bc he was a little cold and aloof lol but at the same time, I really trusted him and he set my expectations where they needed to be - and then he fully surpassed them. I was in bandages for a week after surgery and when I went to the office for the unveiling, I cried tbh because he exceeded any expectations I had. My breasts were awful, they looked like my 84 year old grandmother’s looked, and I felt like he gave me my life back. I know that’s dramatic, but I was so self conscious that I never took my top off or let anyone see my breasts, and I felt like he gave me my social life back

Does the mesh hurt?
