Another internet mystery has been solved!
One of the most prolific liminal space images has finally had its original source and location in real life found, as well as another photo from the same day.
The image originally appeared on 4Chan in 2019, along with the creepypasta caption:
If you're not careful and you no-clip out of reality in the wrong areas, you'll end up in the Backrooms, where it's nothing but the stink of old moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, the endless background noise of fluorescent lights at maximum hum-buzz, and approximately six hundred million square miles of randomly segmented empty rooms to be trapped in.
God save you if you hear something wandering around nearby, because it sure as hell has heard you.
- Anonymous, 4chan (May 13, 2019)
The image spawned a huge amount of lore, fiction, video games, and fan created videos depicting the descent into this weird alternate dimension, as well as the popularity of liminal space imagery. There's even a movie in development based on a youtubers popular Backrooms series.

Basically, the TL;DR
-The file name from the original 4Chan post is what triggered a trail of being able to track down its original source.
-It's located in a retail space in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
-It used to be a furniture store, with wall partitions to separate the furniture displays.
-Years later, it closed and the store became a hobby shop.
-The owners of the hobby shop, circa 2002, had taken photos to document the renovation of the space to turn into another part of their hobby shop, and posted online to share (pre social media, sometimes people just made websites just 'cause).
heres a couple images before the walls were taken out. this is rohner's furniture. the first pic is from 1995, when i believe the space was purchased. the others are all from when the store was still operating. top of the third pic is where the original backrooms image was from.

May 30, 2024 The space eventually became a RC race track as part of the hobby shop. Unclear what the space is used for currently.

May 29, 2024 And of course, people are fast with incorporating this into the lore of the infinitely high building all the "levels" the Backrooms lore has:
Level 0 has been found in the real world!
Now, it will also be found in Backrooms: The Project.

May 30, 2024 ONTD, what are some of your favorite liminal space imagery or lore inspired by them?
I love pool rooms! They're even creepier than the backrooms, because they are seemingly infinite white tiled spaces with pools...that exist for no real reason. There's realistic looking videos made in Unreal Engine of people exploring them (they are also part of the giant Backrooms lore).
