Ages ago, I read some article that said a lot of actors who were considered heart throbs (especially during that era) had baby faces and good hair. The baby faces make them seem harmless and trustworthy while the good hair maintains the aura of youth. Leo definitely fit that bill back then.

Cal was cartoonishly evil, all he needed was a mustache to twirl, so it was easy to root for Jack. But he was much better looking than Jack.
