random Catholic comment: I was in CVS the other day and they had all the Catholic candle set up and there was a couple Pope John Paul II candles and a couple Francis candles, but no Benedict candles. Was he the unpopular pope, the ugly one in the pope boy band? The NKOTB Danny of popes, if you will?

Me, to one of my best friends at an NKOTB concert after the rest of the people in our group legit turned and gave her death stares when she clapped for Danny: "We DO NOT clap for Danny Wood!"

Catholics, apparently: "We DO NOT make candles of Benedict!"

I don't think he was unpopular but he was definitely not as charismatic as John Paul or as comfortable with people like Francis is. Or maybe people really didn't like his red loafers

I thought Benedict was the one with former nazi affiliations too, back when being one was seen as largely, publicly impermissible (I can’t believe I have to type that sentence). It didn’t really gain too much traction but it was probably one of many things that made him retire

He was pretty good at moving priests on to different parishes when they ran into trouble, too, and of course, by trouble, I mean noncing.
