I am so glad we got to see Deirdre Hall (and in a Brady's Pub apron!). When Jimmy mentioned she was his mom, I knew I was going to be so mad if we didn't get to see her at some point this season.
In the second episode when Debra hosted the talk show, they needed to book another guest at the last minute. When they were tossing around names, Jimmy mentioned that his mom is Deirdre Hall (and he even made sure to mention that she's on Days of Our Lives) and that she's always camera ready, but he implied that it was going to be a huge pain in the ass. They got desperate enough to ask if she would do it, and she wanted to know if they would send a car and driver to pick her up and then she wanted to know if she could keep them afterward. Later she wanted to know if the products used by the hair and makeup people for the show used cruelty-free projects. They ended up not needing a second guest so Jimmy lied to his mom (he told her that they used products tested on animals) so she wouldn't get mad that they didn't need her to come on the show. There was also a conversation where Kayla kept talking about how great Deirdre's body was and Jimmy understandably did not want to hear her compliment his mother's ass.
Ahhhhh! Definitely going to rewatch with refreshed eyes. I didn’t even click the Brady apron. Days of Our Lives had a chokehold on my middle school self and she was a big part.
I LOVED staying home sick in middle school because it meant I got to watch Days of Our Lives! Nothing will ever top Marlena's possessed by the devil storyline with the glowing green eyes!
You unlocked a memory. That soap was more bonkers than I remembered!
Story time but I’ll keep it brief: we had a student exchange program rep come to our house and my sister and I were watching Days and it was during the height of Swamp Girl and the rep was like “what is happening??? Fill me in!”
People always cite Passions for the wild storylines, but Days of Our Lives went there first!
My somewhat related anecdote which is kind of the opposite of yours: I once tried to explain the plot of Flowers in the Attic to a male coworker who had never heard of VC Andrews and before I was even partway through, he was reaction was basically WTF?
The moral of the story: when people aren't already immersed in the craziness, they really don't get it. But when they're part of the club, things like Swamp Girl don't seem totally out of left field!
That is so accurate! And my first reaction was “omg he doesn’t know VC Andrews??!” But guys of that time of course wouldn’t know the craziness of that world. Now I want to read an Andrews book!!! It’s so perfect for a laid back Sunday lol.
I definitely loved Passions (especially the theme song) but it was more…obvious? that it was a weird, magical, almost sci fi type of world. While Days was more “DRAMA! With random shit thrown in!”
Every girl I knew read VC Andrews but to this day, I still don't know a single guy who has ever read one of her books (and they are missing out!). Flowers in the Attic is still my all time favorite because it's the OG but My Sweet Audrina was also such a well done creepy mind fuck (and MSA is even better if you rip out the last page so that she actually leaves).
I need to read that!! A friend of mine was OBSESSED with VC Andrews and I remember starting a book (of course I’m blanking on literally everything about the story, I think it only had maybe two sequels) and my friend basically said, “omg that’s child’s play!” And proceeded to recommend prob 6 books. They were so scandalous to my young self, I wonder if they still feel that way.
For me, the difference is that when middle school me read those books, they were scandalous because of the main character's forbidden relationships. But when adult me has re-read those books, it's red flag after red flag of inappropriate and abusive behavior

ITA about the Days vs Passions worlds!
