Charli XCX tells Rolling Stone UK she was initially jealous of Lorde following success of “Royals”:

“When ‘Royals’ came out, I was super jealous of the success that that song got, and that Ella got. You piece all this stuff together in your brain, like: ‘She was into my music.… pic.twitter.com/a7TH5vLED7

This past year has opened my eyes to how messy she is.

That being said, I am surprised she hasn't broken through yet. She has a dedicated fanbase and the music, especially on her last album, was very commercial and radio friendly.

I feel like her solo music is too grating/repetitive for even radio. She does best as a feature for other people, and peaked popularity-wise with Fancy.

its times like these when people scratch their heads when you know the music just aint good enough. I never replay anything I hear from her, its empty and soulless imo.

Her style of music is an acquired taste in my opinion. Not everyone is into that hyperpop brand of pop.

I think she’s just leaned into being a niche indie darling over the last couple albums. I think Crash should’ve gotten more attention though, it was a great, classic pop album. But she has her audience and will probably make music forever at this rate.

I also just will say that I often like her more experimental stuff years after it came out. Like I did NOT get vroom vroom at first and a couple years ago I revisited it and realized how genius it is lol. So I do think she is often ahead of the curve a bit.

Lol I had the same reaction to vroom vroom!! First time I heard it I was like “wtf is this?? It doesn’t make sense” then I randomly heard it on a vine a few years back and I immediately got it. Now I see it as genius experimental pop ahead of the game too.

I’ve heard some people say that her musician is European-club heavy and that’s why some Americans (like me) may not immediately get it.

was SHE ahead of the curve, or was her producer?
No shade but I don't see her being ahead of the curve this past 2 eras (crash and brat)

Good point, Sophie and AG cook were really ahead of the curve. I still think Charli has an ear and writes great hooks when she wants. Crash is a really tightly written and produced pop album in a very classic sense, though. I think Good Ones is underrated in particular.

Oh she's really good at writing hooks, she made some mid songs bangers with her hooks (I love it, Fancy).
And I'm not shitting on Crash, I liked it, and I loved/was obsessed with Good Ones, but I have to admit it's an outlier in her discography, and it kinda feels like an album she would've made if she never made anything else after True Romance. It erases the existence of Chari, HIFN, N1A, P2 in a way. I understand why she made it, but it really seems like a non-canon album in the xcx lore.

crash debuted at #7 on the billboard 200, so it did quite well for her standards

i think she's fine where she is - she has her lane and her dedicated fans who will buy/stream her and sellout her tours

she also writes for other artists and prob makes coin there

i think she'll just always be on the cusp. her moment was years ago with boom-clap, i don't think she'll reach that success again. she's a great musician but idk what it is, her songs just never latch. my bf thinks her stylistic overuse of autotune is way too grating so maybe that's something to do with it. but she'll be fine bc her fanbase is dedicated
