May 21, 2024 13:03

For such an apolitical event, it's sure becoming very political. (And yeah I know it always has been really, but it's finally REALLY showing its ass)

Also something very Hunger-Games-dystopia about an expensive glorified singing contest where a contestant represents a country actively commiting genocide. Just abolish Eurovision at this point, the whole thing feels crazy corrupt.

Any illusion it was apolitical went with banning Russia, this year just showed it's whole ass. I don't know what the answer is, but something has got to change.

Banning Russia but not Israel is insane to me. Maybe now the ICC is applying for arrest warrants for Netanyahu it might change, but I'm not holding my breath

Not as long as MorrocanOil is a major sponsor.

Their contract was apparently for three years, so they should be done now if it's not renewed. All the same, it's pretty interesting how Russias "official: reason for ban was because their broadcaster was too closely connected to Russian politics, and it's pretty clear that they could have used that reason here too.

like truly eurovision this year had to be one of the most dystopian things we've all acquiesced to with little to no fanfare. the EBU is basically an enemy of the people at this point and is actively in deference to whatever the fuck eurovision was supposed to be about. the treatment of its contestants, the blatant favourtism toward anyone who gives them money (in this case, genocide committing isreal), silencing basically all conversation, words, flags (of nations that are competing!!), etc - just fucking wild. and then folks still watched it. the very least anyone can do is just... not watch something. and people can't even do that

Apparently viewing figures here (UK) dropped 25%, but a lot of people are saying that's cos it was in the UK last year. The drop still took it lower than 2022, so I dunno how much it factored, but I'm hoping part of it was a boycott.

I'm usually a casual watcher, but I didn't watch this year.

I think I only ever watched one year and that was 2008. I see a few bits and pieces floating around on the news and socials every year but honestly it's just not something that really interests me. 90% of the songs are trashy EuroPop and not liek the GOOD OLD DAYS of trashy EuropPop

I watch it every year with my family and we boycotted this year, most people I know who usually enjoy it boycotted too. I don’t think that the drop can be explained by just “it’s not in the UK” at all.
