The Today Show's annual Best of Broadway week began today, spotlighting new musicals. First up is the musical adaptation of S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders which received 12 Tony nominations two weeks ago. Tony nominee Adam Rapp wrote the book for this musical. The show is directed by Danya Taymor, niece of Tony award winner Julie Taymor (The Lion King).
Producer Angelina Jolie joined Tony nominees Brody Grant, Sky Lakota-Lynch (the first Native American actor nominated for a Tony), and Joshua Boone for a quick interview. Her daughter Vivienne, who is involved with the show as a "volunteer assistant," was shown nearby. Angelina and Vivienne saw the world premiere of the pre-Broadway run of the show at the La Jolla Playhouse last year. Angelina credits Vivienne with getting her involved with the show. Angelina says that she and many of the cast have matching "Stay Gold" tattoos.
