May 11, 2024 07:26

Eurovision, the yearly song competition between (mostly) European Countries is having a time right now. Most of the drama so far is surrounding Dutch entrant Joost Klein:

UPDATE: RTL news (a legit Dutch media network) has just announced Joost has been disqualified and will not be participating in the Finale tonight. Wow.

do we think people actually like their song, or are people coming out in force just to vote for israel specifically?

It's gotta be politics because that song is NOT good. It's very dated. I know people like to say Ukraine 2022 was politics too, but Stefania was a bop.

Yeah, Ukraine is always good. Plus, they were the ones actually getting invaded.

It's VERY fishy, tbh. Israel is in the top 5 odds for winning but that only just happened within the last day or so. I still believe Sweden wasn't the real winner for 2023 and they just wanted to bring the ESC back to Sweden for the 50th anniversary of ABBA's win, so they aren't beyond messing with the results.

I don't really follow Eurovision that much but I've thought since the 'jury' thing came it it has always seemed like a way to try and rig the votes, so it wouldn't surprise me.

The jury vote has actually existed since the beginning, it was the televote that got introduced mid 90s.

Something was rejigged about a decade or so ago, because the UK came in the top 5 with that Andrew Lloyd Webber song and Jade song and everyone was shocked cos we always come last and the jury thing obviously had huge sway.

you're right, it wasn't, in the sense that Loreen didn't get a single 12 point from the televotes. She was ABSOLUTELY NOBODYS first choice for the winner.

The jury, who gets a free paid trip to the hosting country btw, saw the odds of Kaarijaa winning and made sure not to give enough points.

Cha Cha Cha got the second most televotes in the ENTIRE HISTORY of EUROVISON, just after Ukraine 2022. Like...

There are conspiracy theories then there's hard proof

I was PISSED last year and I 100% believe the conspiracy theories about them wanting Sweden to host the 50th anniversery of ABBAs win, but damn I’m glad we (Finland)doesn’t have to deal with the shitshow that is this years competition

Same. For the first time in a year I'm happy Käärijä didn't win and that we don't have to deal with this mess here in Finland (in Tampere of all places, lmao)

oh loreen clearly only won so that sweden could host this year, which it why it was funny that abba almost immediately said that they wouldn't be there this year.

the eurovision subreddit is a bubble of people being very vocal about not liking that Israel was allowed to compete this year considering the circumstances, so a lot of them were very surprised at the results.

There's a bunch of theories for why they received such a high margin of televotes, one of them being that they are getting pity votes from getting booed, but that did not happen for Russia back in the day, so...

It has to be an organized pro-Israel campaign. Even Kalush Orchestra (Ukraine 2022) got "only" 24% of the Italian televote in the semis, and 29% of the Italian televote in the finals.

The latter.

I strongly suspect it's a lot of people that haven't even listened to any of the songs and just want to ~support Israel~ 🤢
