People assume that when a rapist's conviction is overturned, it's proof that the victims lied.

It isn't. It's almost always a procedural loophole that an expensive, powerful attorney exploited to let a guilty man get away with injustice.

Weinstein and Cosby weren't exonerated. https://t.co/5eehkk9oLA

this happens all the time in "smaller" courts too including family courts where abusive fathers are given preference due to misogynistic judges.

I hate it here.

if you really want to hate it here: my mother worked for Department of Children & Families for over 20 years and she said that in that entire time, the DA didn't prosecute a single case of sexual abuse of children because it's just too iffy to rely on the testimony of children. the best they could do in sex abuse cases was just try to remove the child from the situation.

That is so awful. They are starting to prosecute more of those cases, but not near where it should be. The mindset is starting to shift from “eh it’s a kid, they could be wrong” to “kids don’t lie about that kind of thing”.

There is a local father’s rights attorney who somehow manages to convince a family court judge that abusers had to have unsupervised time with their victims, because dads have rights. Well you can guess what happened.

"many cases" of convicted men being proven innocent, when some teeny tiny percentage of accused rapists actually make it to trial & are found guilty? Especially if we're talking about the Hollywood Me Too movement, when a lot of the men in question have money & power, that sounds ridiculous. But of course shitty men will interpret this as "women be lying." Jfc.

Yeah, name ten of these “many cases”, please. Name one.

I’m honestly amazed at the amount of people who think a conviction being overturned, someone winning a case, never going to jail etc etc means someone is innocent. All it means is that there are ways to exploit the legal system and the rich are particularly good at getting away with everything.

I recently listened to a podcast about Michael Jackson's civil and criminal case and many of the big celebrity defense attorneys really knew how to speak to this misunderstanding and make it become "fact" if repeated loudly and frequently enough. Thomas Mesereau even now keeps on saying the 2005 criminal trial was about money to make Jackson settling the 1993 case for $25 million look less bad or blur the public's understanding.

It's the same kind of people who also thought OJ was confirmed innocent because he was found not guilty - idiots who don't understand the legal system.
