I do wonder if I am ever going to reach a point where I'm not shocked that people will say depraved shit like that whilst clearly congratulating themselves on being the good guys. But every time, it fucks me up.

You never wanna get to a place where you're not shocked. Grip onto your humanity.

This. It's an important part of self-care that doesn't really get talked about.

I've personally had to check in with myself at times when I've found myself becoming more cynical than usual; for example, I grew up with Jeff Session as my senator, so when he was made attorney general, I found myself not having much of a reaction, i.e. "of course this is happening now." But when I've sat with it for a moment in times like that, they've reminded me that I can't try to make things better if I give in that cynicism, so I have to remember what's ultimately important to me and do what I can to take care of myself to be better able to put myself back in the proverbial fight.

Sorry for the length and this isn't a judgment on how anyone personally reacts (I'm agreeing with the comments in this thread!), just in a bit of a contemplative mood lol

Oh it's okay, don't apologize at all! It's very easy to turn your cheek to things happening in the world and not only is it easy, but I understand why people do now more than ever. We are bombarded with bad news 24/7, you cannot escape it, and our brains absolutely will disconnect us from it if it knows we can't physically handle it (which none of us can.) I've become desensitized to some things that I should reintroduce my emotions to. I'm keeping myself informed about Gaza but have dialed back my exposure to videos bc it was truly taking a toll on my mental health, like suicidal ideation stuff that became very scary. When you feel yourself drowning, it's important to set a boundary.

On Twitter the number of people who make this remark under pictures and videos of dead children means I'm no longer surprised.

I think like most of us here, I have seen some truly awful photos of dead Palestinian babies and children on social media. I don't see how they can see something like that and not care unless they are psychopaths.
