I keep wondering, where are the hit songs, where are the bops? That Fortnite song goes nowhere. For a pop singer, she has no catchy songs on these latest albums. Her hype is so artificial...it's not about the music anymore

"where are the hit songs"

I've noticed for a while that every time she releases (or re-releases) an album, the radio stations here will mainly just play Shake it off or Blank space.

That album with Blank Space, Style was the last one which had catchy songs. I think those songs were produced by Max Martin. These latest albums are good for falling asleep to. No catchy bop/tune

Cruel Summer is still in heavy rotation too.

Cruel Summer is the last bona fide banger she made and I'm gonna go ahead and say having St Vincent on that track probably played a large part in that

also...that song's about Matty. Blech

the bad boy stuff never made any sense for Joe but it absolutely does for Matty. And...I'm going to have to ruin one of everyone's favourite songs by her and say that I think Clean might be about him too, given the very obvious references it's making to drugs, addiction, getting sober. It sorta made sense for Harry in a general 'limerence can be an addiction' kind of way, it makes WAY more sense if it's about a person who had an actual drug problem

I think there's gonna be more songs on 1989 that we didn't know were about him but he's 'the one that got away' for her, not Harry. Honestly I should do an ONTD Original about songs that were probably about him all along

That makes so much sense now that you mentioned it.

I Know Places has to be about him as well - aside from it being about a lover you have to keep a secret but she knows how to (which, ahem, Cruel Summer), it references him having 'green eyes'. Harry's eyes are a grey-blue that can look green in a certain light. Matty's are just green. Well, hazel-green but if you image search for his eyes you can see it. Just not in any photos where his pupils are huge lol

There's also the line in Blank Space about 'I can make the bad guys good for a weekend', which doesn't fit for Harry at all. Wildest Dreams also has the line 'he's so bad but he does it so well' and that one always stuck out to me as...that's not Harry.

Fuck, 1989 really isn't about Harry after all is it? I saw someone in another comment say they thought the title of the album was a nod to the 1975 and thinking on this, it makes sense. Ok, time to do an ONTD original lmao

Damn. You could be right! An ontd original on this would be amazing.

I also bet Taylor thinks Matty has that James Dean smile or whatever she said.

Swifties don't realize their setting themselves up to have to defend some truly shit albums and this is only the first step.

Its like an overprotective parent dealing with their spoiled kid. The more you send death threats to any music critic who doesn't give her a high enough reviews, fighting people who don't like the new album in comment sections across the internet, the more she'll keep churning out mid-tier albums like this one. Why not? You'll still buy it. Why give 110% when she can give 40% and still get your money anyway?

I wonder if this album is an unconscious first step to see how long she can get away with doing that?

Nah it's giving 'deep inside a manic phase/mixed episode' vibes, I recall in another post that it was written and recorded over the space of 2 months so when she was going to Jack's pretty much every day she wasn't playing a show during spring/summer, that's what she was doing, not 1989/rep(TV)
And, as a musician/writer who has bipolar, when you're having a manic episode you are convinced everything you are doing is an astounding work of genius. I'm not at all surprised that it isn't.

I also think this album is meant as a signal to Matty that she's still carrying a torch for him

You can tell she's trying to be a critically acclaimed songwriter.
