Although I like the format change (which is unsurprising because I also liked Step It Up and Dance), I don't know how sustainable it is for viewers. This week they got to waste time with all of the "OMG LOOK AT OUR HOUSE!!!" but can they really justify an hourlong show every week when they're only showing us two dance routines? This week it seemed a bit unfair that one group got contemporary and the other group got hip hop. Next week is Broadway so I'm assuming that however many groups they have will all learn a Broadway routine. I would have preferred that they did that this week with the music videos to make it more fair.
The most surprising thing was that they eliminated two girls but I am glad that they aren't doing boy/girl eliminations just for the sake of keeping an even number of male/female dancers.
The biggest negative to this format is that with five dancers in each group, it wasn't as easy to watch everyone to see how each dancer was doing. And viewers are not going to get attached to specific dancers if they keep doing this because all I really noticed was when someone stood out for a negative reason.
I hate that all four of the solos were angsty contemporary. You can show me how much you want to be here without resorting to that!
