The latest episode of Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent may have felt extra familiar to Canadian viewers. The plot revolved around the death of a grocery store chain executive amidst protests against corporate greed and high food prices. As the episode progresses, the two main detectives uncover a scandal that essentially mirrors the bread price fixing scandal that was uncovered in 2017 which revealed that top Canadian retailers, super market chains, and bread producers conspired with each other to consistently raise the price of bread over the course of about 15 years.
The episode also noted that with rising grocery costs, the idea of "your friendly neighbourhood billionaire" is a hard sell, a clear reference to the real life cringeworthy ads for President's Choice and No Name, that feature Galen Weston Jr (current net worth estimated to be $8.7 billion US). Other notable lines in the episode included: "Times are tough, groceries are expensive, people get angry" and "Can't we just have bread?"
For those who didn't watch, here's a spoiler about how the episode played out. [Spoiler (click to open)]The Galen Weston Jr. character, Nadia Betts, turns out to be the one who organized a hit on her own grocery executive after learning that the board was considering replacing her with the exec. The dead executive had also caught onto the price fixing scheme so Betts tries to make it appear as though the exec was responsible for the price fixing scheme while also getting rid of her competition and making the CEO of a bread company appear responsible for the murder.
ONTD, how do you feel about the current cost of groceries?
