I just came back from watching this. My heart was pounding during the final battle sequence. I liked it overall, but it felt like there was something missing especially in the first half. Pretty much loved everything after Jesse Plemons showed up.

I was just about to comment that I thought the second half of the film was incredible. It was a very engaging film for me from start to finish. The imagery was beautiful. I loved the interesting music choices. I am also a major Kiki Dunst fan so I am already going to be biased. I dont think it was perfect but I really liked the choice to leave the politics of the war out. I don’t really get what making it about the war would add - because even if one side is more “justified” here, would it make a difference? Jesse Plemon’s character for example I think was on the president’s side or the side not taking down the government.

But anyway, that finale was INSANE! I’d see it again if it wasn’t also an upsetting watch. I was really rattled after Jesse’s scene.

I thought the comments by the sniper duo perfectly summed it up. It didn’t even matter who was giving the orders anymore.
And it was so great to see (hear?) some unusual music choices. Some of the cinematography was also breath-taking

yes I really liked that they decided to do it all from the journalists pov.

At the end of the day, it was pretty obvious that Offerman was meant to be a [Spoiler (click to open)]a facist president/bordering on dictator. I remember there was a mention of his third term, etc. and ofc nothing about Jesse's character was subtle lol.

my fists were CLENCHED during the finale lmao and Kirsten Dunst was great! Loved her performance. And the sound design was INCREDIBLE. I want to watch it again, but now that I know how upsetting some parts are I'm going to hold off for a while. I'm going to try and catch it one more time before it leaves theaters though.

I wasn’t 100% sure about the president.
[Spoiler (click to open)] The war seemed to have been going on for a while, so maybe he was in a third term because elections were impossible and it was wartime. I think several scenarios are possible.

the person I watched it with mentioned that possibility too! arguments can def be made for different scenarios and it's interesting to read people's takes on it.

I was someone who was initially rolling my eyes when I heard the movie wasn't overtly "political", but I ended up liking the way it was addressed (or not addressed) in the movie - imo it was definitely political, just not in the way i was expecting.

The war was happening because of the president. From what I heard he had forcibly taken a 3rd term after disbanding the FBI.

Ooh good points. Garland clearly wanted to obfuscate the politics by making California and Texas on the same side

I really liked the fact that it was told from a war photographer's POV. The scene with Jesse Plemon made me really anxious, as well as the finale. Jesse Plemon is really good at playing a psycho

I loved Kirsten Dunst's performance and I'm glad she's being praised for it

I wasn't even sure about that re: Plemons cause I think part of it is that because of the vastness of the country, a war starts to be hard to manage. Like at some point it's all chaos, especially if it's been going on for awhile. Who knows what people will be doing in all those little pockets of the country?

And like I couldn't tell the difference between Plemon's character uniform and any of the others that popped up.
