Former Observer & HuffPost journalist claims Katy Perry’s career decline was planned by “some people,” similar to how Christina Aguilera’s career was sabotaged.
They then alleged writers “trashed” Katy to generate clicks, more money. Last year, former Pitchfork writers alleged…

I will agree that Akon and Gaga def took advantage of people noticing the similarities in their styles at the time and the accusation that bigger artist Christina was stealing smaller artist Gaga's electropop sound (which was the rising trend at the time) and her look. Christina stupidly took the bait and replied that she didn't know whether Gaga was a man or woman or a band to which Gaga/Akon immediately jumped on that press and Gaga replied that she was only ever honored that Christina is aware of she is and would love to her send her flowers since the drama got her press. Gaga ends up looking nice and humble which Christina came off snippy. And iirc Akon years later admitted they purposely went for that bait because it was convenient.
By the time Bionic had come out (2010, Gaga had already released The Fame Monster the year before (2009) and was pretty much established with Bad Romance. I remember people again accusing Christina of copying Gaga's style when she released "Not Myself Tonight" (although tbf I remember a stronger Madonna's express yourself/Human Nature/Rain influence for that video) but I will say that NMT was a pretty weak single and it had 4 years since her last studio album and the next singles didn't do as great either so I think it was a case of the newer pop girls having more interesting music and Christina either being late or not the right time because I've heard people say it aged well.
I don't see why Gaga would orchestrate a complete takedown of Christina when it would sense that the other pop girls were threats? Even though around that time Gaga was THEE girl because of Bad Romance. And Christina had success the following year with Burlesque so I mean she wasn't ruined completely.
Katy on the other hand I always felt was a one-hit wonder that got lucky she had more singles up her sleeves. I think there was also a perceived lack of growth or gimmicky aspect regarding her artistry. Her and Rihanna were known as the "singles" pop stars at the time cause it was more that on their albums than grounded work but Rihanna managed to overcome this. Katy cutting her and dying it blonde I do think played a part in her popularity taking a dip + Taylor releasing all her music the same night Katy dropped Witness put a bit of a nail in her coffin.
I could probably believe that both cases music journalists at pitchfork or other similar sites could be snobbish and plant smear reviews but I don't think that was the main factor for their dips.

Bionic was a decent album, but we were all caught up in gaga fever.
