what, for you, is the piece of media that is most emblematic of 'the before times'? for me it is master of none

March 28, 2024 not really clear what 'the before times' here means (pre trump? pre covid? obama era?), but the replies also talk about other media that were very of their time
I rewatch Happy Endings a lot and that show is so emblematic of the Great Recession era.

March 28, 2024 it's still on Broadway and still fairly popular but I feel like Hamilton came out at the last possible time it could have without more people realizing what a deeply weird premise it was

March 31, 2024 i would like to present glee as the most obama era show ever, it literally aired in may 2009 and ended march 2015. it existed solely in the version of the us where obama was present.

March 31, 2024 Hillary Clinton episode was the apex point for me

March 29, 2024 Transparent is the ultimate mid-2010s show. Nearly as foundational to the streaming era as House of Cards yet completely memory-holed for so many distinct one-of-a-kind reasons.
You could write a book and frankly someone should!

March 28, 2024 The Colbert Report. A show like that could not survive in the era of 10,000 competing YouTube political pundits and a social climate incapable of interpreting satire. A show on cable TV could also absolutely not capture the attention of a present-day young liberal audience.

March 30, 2024 I think people who constantly say "this would never get made today" are lame as fuck but this show is one of the few times that statement is 100% true. I genuinely could not see an American studio letting something like this come out now. Even for its time this shit was crazy
