I rewatch Happy Endings a lot and that show is so emblematic of the Great Recession era.

The Colbert Report. A show like that could not survive in the era of 10,000 competing YouTube political pundits and a social climate incapable of interpreting satire. A show on cable TV could also absolutely not capture the attention of a present-day young liberal audience.

I think people who constantly say "this would never get made today" are lame as fuck but this show is one of the few times that statement is 100% true. I genuinely could not see an American studio letting something like this come out now. Even for its time this shit was crazy
