The door debate annoys me so much. There is literally a scene in the movie that shows him trying to get on the door with her, the door floods with water, and then he gets off and the door floats again with just Rose. So no, he could not have been saved.

They had to tie their life preservers (similar to the kind available at the time) under the wall piece to keep them afloat*. But the average person wouldn't think to do that.

*Even then they sank down in the water a few inches, which I think would add to the hypothermia danger. Although they didn't address that.
