the internet is sooooo fickle. i count myself in that group but the older i get the less i feel like i need to voice my opinion on every single little thing.
the internet loves an ingenue, loves a takedown, loves a redemption arc. you see it with most people highly visible in the public eye i think
I also think it's easy to blame ~the internet~ when the media played a large role in the treatment of Anne. No one was forcing entertainment journalists to write about how annoying she was, but these same institutions will claim they are ready for the resurgence of Anne now that they have someone else to bitch about. I predict Sydney Sweeney will be their next victim.
It’s kind of a circular system though especially with how the current media landscape is so reliant on clicks and can often be quite “click baity” with people very rarely reading beyond the headlines.
Someone starts becoming unpopular online and then media tone towards that person shifts and the content of articles and headlines shifts. With Anne she was becoming “overexposed” and “annoying” and the headlines would then shift to the cringy things she was saying and that’s all people would see about her which was further fueling the online dislike. It kind of all fuels each other in the end
That's true but I will say the media is capable of ignoring or deflecting criticism about some celebrities. They pick and choose who is a 'safe' target.
That’s fair and I think the Taylor Swift mentioned below is actually a good example of this in that she is also being seen as overexposed/annoying but the media is not jumping on and instead pushing back. Taylor is an example where she has a fanbase that will still give the clicks you’re seeking if you defend her so there is benefit in doing that. The media isn’t fueling the fires bc they don’t need to and get more benefit in not.
I do think this convo around Anne in particular is also kind of funny bc while she definitely suffered unfair vitriol there are also reasons why she’s bounced back (and is probably more loved then ever right now). If she wasn’t such an attractive women she wouldn’t have been able to bounce back the same way
i guess i don't have a great memory for what came first but i guess whether it's a chicken or the egg situation media outlets have gotten more intertwined with social media discourse so i can't imagine they won't indulge in the next takedown. You're even starting to see it with Taylor Swift who has people even MORE pissed off b/c her media coverage hasn't been critical enough after her original media "downfall"
people here are already pretty over sydney so i could see it coming too, though i will say so far it's mostly been about her acting, which i don't think was prevalent as much in the "hathahate"
sydney has a blonde white middle america prettiness that society inherently protects and caters to but she's also very pop[ular with unseemly men b/c of all that + her big chest so we could throw her to the wolves if/when she does one single thing that's not very "girls girl" -- who knows how it'll go tbh.
I think the tide will turn on Sydney when people start comparing her to another talented young actress (either a POC, not as conventionally attractive, or both!) who isn't getting cast in as many projects. She doesn't seem like she'd pull a ScarJo.
