one of my mom's closest friends, an old sorority sister, is an actor who's gotten a lot of work in stuff that gets a lot of replay and even though she's not a household name to anyone, the residuals have meant she's had a really comfortable life (especially since she played the mom in Hocus Pocus -- Halloween is her favorite holiday because the residuals she gets from that getting replayed on a bunch of channels are REALLY nice). When my mom would visit her while I was growing up, she would always come back with really fancy nice presents. She is not someone people know instantly on the streets, she's a working actor who has been able to have a comfortable life with a career spanning fifty years and survived even the down times because the residuals were there for her. She came from a working class background, she was in college on scholarship. My mom loves telling the story about how she had a hand in her career because my grandfather fixed her teeth a major discount before she got her first head shots taken and moved to ( ... )

haha yes they were sorority sisters together in college. a lot of actors went to their school (Illinois Wesleyan) that were pretty successful as they had a very good performing arts program, which was why my mom went as she was considering going into acting as well, but decided to do the more practical elementary education instead. But Frankie Faison and Richard Jenkins also went to school around the same time as my mom though she didn't know them very well.

the stories the OITNB actors told were horrifying. That was one of the shows that was a cornerstone of netflix's original series success. Absolutely unforgivable that they cheaped out on the cast so badly (and I'm sure the writers too).

Omg I love it!!! and yessss to your mom becoming a teacher! I’m sure it wasn’t easy (I say that because I have no patience). Giving her all the props 👏👏👏👏

But omg Frankie Faison??? I’m a Silence/hannibal nerd (except the Hannibal show with what’s his fave so maybe I’m not a nerd) so I I love it and Richard Jenkins is an underrated fave. “The Visitor” is so good!!!

lol I am so late replying to this but she hated being a teacher haha. She only did it a few years then transitioned to social work (which tbh sounds worse to me but she loved it!)

and yeah! My mom didn't know Frankie but it's wild because at one point in the 90s he and Stephanie (my mom's friend) had a sitcom on Fox together called True Colors where they played a married couple. Then he was recast in season two with Clevon Little lol
