As I'm rewatching 90210....i miss more "normal" teen shows.

But I'm also tiring of how waiting 2-3 years for streaming shows when broadcast can do 22 episodes in 1 year with only 3 months off inbetween.

Most streaming shows aren't even worth the wait.

And it's genuinely untenable, as you say, for teen shows. Most of the actors start out at 19/20. You can't wrap up senior year with them all being 30.

Have teen shows on streaming had this problem, in general? Something like Never Have I Ever did its four season run quite smoothly from 2020-23.

Other then Euphoria, Sex Education was another teen show where a lot of people started talking about how much the cast had visibly aged out of playing teenagers by the final season, and I know that some of the actors spoke up agreeing with them that it felt a bit ridiculous when they were well into their late 20’s/they were ready to move on

The fourth season came out over five years after the first, even though each 8 episode season was only meant to cover the length of one term time from what I remember

Four seasons in five years (2019 to 2023) is pretty good overall, especially when you consider there was a pandemic in the middle of it (which applies to a lot of shows, including Euphoria; Season 2 of that was literally just beginning shooting when lockdown started and it took a whole year to resume production).

I feel like Ginny & Georgia is def going to have this problem. The main 'teen' actors are like 25-26 now, yet the characters are like 16, and there's still 2 more seasons to go.

I’ve noticed the same thing with that show, people are always saying how young Antonia Gentry looks, but to me her age was definitely starting to become more apparent by the second season. I mean not in a bad way because she apparently is 26 in reality and she looks great, but still she can’t really pass as a 16 year old for that much longer I wouldn’t say. And everything has meant to have happened more or less consecutively as well, rather than one season to cover one school year, so she’s most likely going to be playing 16 for season 3 as well

They haven’t even started filming the third season yet either as far as I know, even though the second season came out in January of last year

i think this is kind of an overall issue with most of the ~prestige~ tv shows now, the actors they all want to use are booked and busy to begin with where it used to be a soft place to land for names with nothing else going on

That is so true. The constant need to go after big names who are often movie stars makes production a nightmare in terms of scheduling

It is a little bit bizarre how it’s gone from one extreme to the next, like probably 22-25 episodes a year was too much at times and a lot of those seasons would have been better if they had been tightened up a little more, but I feel like the answer to that is not to go the the Netflix and HBO route of only producing 8-10 episodes every two years or so. Especially for teen shows with younger casts noticeably ageing at a time when you’re often meant to buy that just a single semester has passed

Something like 13-16 episodes per year would be a nice compromise, but it just seems like production takes so much longer now for some reason, even when filming is done you’re usually looking at at least an 8 month wait before everything is finalised and the release date can be announced

Even HBO going from the 13 episode norm to 8-10 episodes is annoying as hell

16 episode seasons should definitely be the norm for most streaming shows.

The fact that we're entering a new norm of releasing 3-4 episodes of a 10 episode season, going on a hiatus, and then releasing the remainder is CRAZY!

At least film 2 seasons back2back if a you do is film 8-10 episodes.

Or just -- keep it at 10, but have a consistent production schedule every year.

The average episode of a streaming show tends to be much more elaborate in terms of filmmaking than your average network TV episode.

Euphoria is on the extreme end of this, mind you. The aesthetics on that are really something.

I feel like teen shows don't often work with only 8-10 episodes. Especially if you're trying to do love triangles (which I feel is only really a trope that works with younger characters) - it's not enough time to invest in and establish both relationships/possibilities.
