I know 4 different men who recently had vasectomies because of surprise babies.

One of them scheduled his appt the day after his wife revealed to him that they’re expecting. She was PISSED. Not that she’s pregnant because she was ok with one more kid, but that she’s been asking her husband for 4 years to get the vasectomy and he kept putting it off.

He’s a good guy in every other way, but that’s so fucked up to me.

it's a permanent procedure. what about it is "fucked up". like are yall allright? no one has to do surgery they dont want, women included. get your tubes tied then. what on earth. if someone wants to do it great, but everyone here sounds crazy. have you all just forgotten condoms exist? you dont even have to take the pill if you dont want to.

vasectomies are reversible…

yall are acting like any procedure is just a lil snipsnip nbd, its already been discussed that theyre not always reversible, that there may be complications in the future but also thats just logic for anyone thats had any procedure done? not a single one is completely risk free. people die from routine ones. people have allergic reactions to medication. its one things to say "i wish my partner would do this it would be so practical", its another to think them shitty for not wanting to. actually insane. id rather tough anything out then let a doctor do shit to me after my bad experiences, but it doesnt have to be that bad, people have a right to just be slightly nervous about it and its enough to say no. now should we be pissed about the lack of a male birth control pill? hell yes. and again, condoms exist. double bag that shit.

a reversal is not guaranteed. Stats say vasectomy reversals are 60-90% successful, and that chances of pregnancy after reversal are >50%. So definitely not something anyone should take on if they don't 100% want it to be permanent, any more than a woman should have a tubal ligation if they want kids in the future, as those too are reversible but not guaranteed (IIRC they're like 75% successful).

Plus they are expensive and aren't covered by insurance.

I am all for vasectomies but urologists frequently caution people to not assume they can easily reverse a vasectomy like it never happened. There are risks to future fertility, which is why they're usually recommended when a person is done having kids.

We need more options for people who are not yet done having kids but don't want them now, so that the burden is just on the person with the uterus.

Are…. YOU okay? Having your tubes tied is so much more invasive and a much more permanent procedure than a vasectomy.

Why wouldn’t a man get his shit snipped if he and his wife have decided they’re content with the number of children they have?

Btw, as this is a close friend of mine, I know that they were using condoms and she was on the pill. Still ended up pregnant.

Also, why are you ok with women having to take all responsibility in a relationship - no matter the risk it’ll have on their bodies?

To add what others have said - a lot of doctors won't do tubal ligations if you're still in your 20s, don't have kids already, only have one kid, aren't married, or the doctor themselves have a religious objection to it. While age may be a factor for some doctors in performing vasectomies, men face significantly less barriers in being approved for them.

The way things are going, women have less and less choices when it comes to bodily autonomy and as another commenter has said, it's entirely possible the option you seem to think is nbd, a tubal ligation, will be denied for any number of reasons. It's time for men to step up, if they want to keep women from having unwanted pregnancies -- which includes ones the *men themselves* don't want -- they need to start having these simple procedures like a vasectomy, what on earth!

Here's the thing. Condoms are great and useful if they're used correctly. If they're used correctly, there's like a 95% of working correctly. But if they aren't put on correctly, before or during sex, you can get slip ups. I had a slip up where I got off of him and the condom was still inside.

I have coworkers whose condoms broke and they were on the pill. Still got pregnant. But forcing women to go under to be out for possible days while taking this surgery vs just snipping two tubes where the dude is back up and running within the next 48 hours?

Guess it took another bill o AT LEAST 18,000$ over 18 year to get a simple and quick procedure! Some people learn the hard way!
