Tbh I think people are/were projecting the "wife guy" label onto him and are now overly upset about what happened.

He did talk about his wife in his stand up, but he didn't focus on her the way people act like he did imo.

the only joke i can remember is the she's a jewish bitch and i love her one which i didn't really care for back then anyway. i think because he has that nice guy charming in a goofy way aura about him that people projected anything they wanted onto him so the messiness felt like a betrayal.

the way people STILL act about this reminds me of taylor swift stans who live vicariously through her songs and place themselves in the victim role.

yep, while all my white friends frothed at the mouth over him and I politely went "he's okay" and privately tried to avoid most of his comedy and even *I* was aware of the Wife Guy label.......

He did talk about his wife, but he ALSO talked about his substance use issues so people who were surprised pikachu face at him "suddenly" in rehab and his marriage falling apart were not paying attention.

He talked about his wife quite a bit, but she wasn't his only and main focus.

The first time I heard of John was back when he shared his story about lying to his doctor to try and get prescription drugs so that may be where the disconnect is for me.

Hard same. Like vividly remember New in Town with him talking causally about his drug use and abuse and knew a person very similar to him - kind of that "scrawny clean cut guy" look who struggled with cocaine use for years so immediately I saw the same in John. I did like that he talked about his wife and thought they sounded like they had a cute life there for a bit, but was not in some state of shock when everything went down. He told us who he was.

I sincerely hope both he and Anna find better moments in their lives than the last few years seem to have been though, especially for his kid's sake. That kid, regardless of how they came about, should get a good dad, and Anna hopefully can find a better partner. Whole thing was sad but it was weird the way the internet was about it and how people seemed to forget what he had told us about himself for years.

Someone below mentioned that Anna herself also went to rehab around the same time as John so I hope they are both in a happier and healthier place than they used to be.

He focused much more on his past with addiction and yet him relapsing and how that completely upended his life is kinda skipped over and he’s just a cheating asshole.
