-It's a culture clash of epic proportions when cheerleader Brooke and unpopular journalist Sam, girls on the opposite ends of the school hierarchy, find themselves forced to make nice when Brooke's father meets Sam's mother on a cruise and become engaged. The girls are forced to reside in the same house, and their groups of friends are forced to socialize. Their groups of friends include smart-but-socially-awkward Harrison, popular quarterback Josh, power-hungry cheerleader Nicole and bubbly (but not-too-bright) cheerleader Mary.
-Murphy recounts the bts drama of getting the show made “It was 1998, and I was meeting for Popular with an executive at The WB, who has since died,” Ryan Murphy explains to Refinery29 over the phone. “He would make fun of me in these meetings, imitate my voice and make me sound very feminine. He gave me a note on a Popular script, where I had one of the characters wearing a fur coat. He said, ‘You have to take it out...It’s code for gay. You’re being very gay here.’”
-He would get network notes asking to make Mary Cherry less gay and during Season 1 they largely left him alone but started interveneing more during season 2.
-The show would get cancelled after 2 seasons and ending on a cliffhanger.
-Even though Murphy has worked with some of the cast since the series ended....doesn't seem like there has ever been interest in trying to revive the show or reuniting for any wink wink nod nods to address the cliffhanger.
