In South Asian culture having pre-wedding events is pretty standard.

We (Pakistani culture) have mehndis to dance and sing because weddings are usually religious and sombre (less so now in modern weddings).

I assume this is a Hindu wedding, but I think sangeets are pretty similar to mehndis.
