tbh if it didn’t have jodie foster it wouldn’t have been made lol. imo anyway, but also, season 1 is one of my favorite things ever and i have rewatched many times, i love it that much. didn’t fuck with season 2 or 3, but watched all of season 4. i enjoyed the setting, scene, the heavy female cast, and the indigenous themes/representation. they had a beautiful midwifery scene, and the woman giving birth was surrounded by other women throat singing and it was amazing, it made me cry and beam with joy and was just really beautiful. AND i also enjoyed the ~reveal scene.
all of that is to say i can acknowledge season 1 has flaws, is misogynistic, nic is clearly a weenie, etc., and it does have a lot of obsessed fan boys with their knickers in a twist but at the end of the day season 4 just wasn’t that good imo, mainly because the writing was all over the place and didn’t make sense. you can make the same critique for season 1 in some ways but idk, it felt more egregious here. like, ryan murphy writes more seamless plots. that’s a bit hyperbolic but yah lol. i also hated the score, there were a lot of cheesy choices that pulled me right out of the scene, like ZAP! i would have enjoyed more indigenous music and think that would have been a stronger choice.
so, i watched all of it, i don’t think it was pure shit, i wouldn’t say DONT WATCH IT!!!! but i didn’t finish it and go “wow, that was good,” so i couldn’t necessarily recommend it, either. honestly people are doing the most with regards to both singing its praises and hating on it as the worst thing they have ever seen, it’s a battle of will and force at this point and i am enjoying all of the convos and takes and pettiness tbh LOL. so actually for pure research purposes i absolutely can recommend it in that capacity!!!
thank you for this thorough review! its weird because i could have almost guessed most of what youre saying and i have 0 clue about anything at all regarding this season. i just doubted that you can walk into someones set up universe and make it fresh and interesting and still somehow cohesive. and the fact that i keep hearing that they ~allude to s1 has worried me, because it feels like it'll be a rehash of the Top Moments and that doesnt bode well for a focused new plot.
but having truly no clue about anything, i'm pleasantly surprised by a lot of what you've mentioned, so i feel a bit more enthusiastic about checking it out. the midwifery scene and indigenous representation in general sounds like something i definitely shouldnt miss, and a cast of women and women writing is going to get automatic support from me no matter what. i'm very glad it a slog to get through then!
but yeah, i could have guessed that it wouldn't really hit the same spot as the first one. ill be the first to admit it has a lot of flaws and those really came out glaringly in the later seasons when nic had absolutely free reign. it was unwatchable. he should accept more revision and work with more people. but damn when s1 was good it was fantastic and there were a lot of parts that came together brilliantly. i firmly believe in that thing about everyone having one good story in them and that was the one that nic spent so long on and then he had the usual tv writing period to come up with a whole new concept and he just isnt that guy. his complete lack of grace in this makes me not even pity him. just take your time, write novels, and give up tv, man.
